Nottingham Forest plotting deadline day move for Championship winger

Nottingham Forest will make a deadline day move for Stoke City winger James McClean, as per a report by Birmingham Live.

Martin O’Neill is looking to bring him his second signing of the transfer window today. The Reds have already signed Tunisia international defender Yohan Benalouane this month.

They are now plotting a move for fellow Championship winger James McClean from Stoke to add more options out wide, in a deal that could see Ben Osborn go the other way. O’Neill knows the 29-year-old well from managing him at Sunderland and with the Republic of Ireland.

McClean, who has 60 caps for his country to his name, only joined Stoke in July for a fee of £5 million from West Brom. He has since played 26 times for the Potters, scoring once and gaining six assists.

He moved to England in 2011 to join Sunderland from Derry City. O’Neill handed him his first-team debut for the Black Cats in a Premier League win over Blackburn Rovers.

McClean spent two seasons with the North-East club in the top flight before dropping into the Championship to join Wigan Athletic in 2013. He scored 10 goals in 86 games for the Latics in his two years there and was signed by West Brom for a fee of just £1.5 million.

He was an important player for the Baggies and played over 100 games for the Midlands club. However, his time there came to end in the summer. His move to Stoke hasn’t really worked out but could a move to Nottingham Forest and a reunion with O’Neill be on the cards for him today?
