Stoke City will have to spend big to land League One defender

Stoke City will have to splash the cash to land Portsmouth defender Matt Clarke, as per a report by Stoke On Trent Live.

The 22-year-old was first linked with a move to the Potters earlier this week but Pompey are desperate to keep hold of him.

The new Stoke boss, Nathan Jones, is keen to bring in a couple of new signings before the end of the January transfer window. He wants young and hungry players to help lift his side up the Championship table.

Clarke has emerged on his radar after he has impressed this season for Pompey and has been a crucial player for Kenny Jackett’s side who are currently top of League One.

He started his career at Ipswich Town and rose through the youth ranks at Portman Road. He made four appearances in the Championship as a youngster before going out on loan to Portsmouth. The Fratton Park club then made the move permanent in 2016 and Clarke has not looked back since.

The youngster has played over 150 games for Portsmouth and is regarded as one of the most promising defenders in the third tier.

Pompey boss Kenny Jackett has insisted he is not for sale this month, as per a report by the Portsmouth News: “First off, we’re not interested in selling him. Secondly, we’ve not had an inquiry or a bid. And even if there was, it won’t change the stance of the club – he’s not for sale.”
