Stoke City interested in Portsmouth defender

Stoke City are interested in a move for Portsmouth defender Matt Clarke, as per a report by the Stoke Sentinel.

The new Potters boss, Nathan Jones, is keen to bring two or three players to the Bet365 Stadium before the end of the January transfer window as he looks to put his own stamp on his newly inherited squad.

There is expected to be both comings and goings at Stoke over the next week or so. Bojan has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer side New England Revolution whereas James McClean could reunite with his former Republic of Ireland managed Martin O’Neill at Nottingham Forest.

Portsmouth centre-back Matt Clarke is one who could be heading for the entrance door at Stoke though before the window slams shut.

Jones wants to tighten up his backline and is using his knowledge of League One by targeting Clarke. The 22-year-old would also be a decent long-term signing by the Championship side.

He has impressed this season for Pompey and has been a crucial player for Kenny Jackett’s side who are currently top of the third tier.

Clarke started his career at Ipswich Town and rose through the youth ranks at Portman Road. He made four appearances in the Championship as a youngster before going out on loan to Portsmouth. The Fratton Park club then made the move permanent in 2016 and Clarke has not looked back since.
