Sunderland star striker set to complete €4m move to French side

French journalist Emery Taisne has revealed on Twitter that French Ligue 1 side Bordeaux have agreed a deal to sign Sunderland striker Josh Maja for a fee of €4 million.

Sunderland striker Josh Maja has been at the centre of an ongoing transfer saga throughout the January transfer window, but it looks set to come to an end imminently. Maja is reportedly on the brink of sealing a €4 million switch to French side Bordeaux.

Emery Laise – reporter for French outlet L’Equipe – posted the update on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon, stating that Maja is expected to complete his move to Bordeaux.

A host of British sides had been heavily linked with moves for Maja and it seemed that he would make the move to either the Premier League or to Scotland. However, Bordeaux have emerged as frontrunners and look to have jumped ahead of the chasing pack to seal the signing of the promising young striker.

Celtic had been linked with a move, along with Premier League duo West Ham and Cardiff City who were believed to have taken an interest in Maja.

Sunderland have been in the market for a striker throughout the January transfer window. The Black Cats have been heavily linked with a move for Wigan Athletic striker Will Grigg and made offers to try and take the Northern Irishman back to League One. However, their offers were rejected by the Latics.

Sunderland boss Jack Ross has made no secret of the fact that they are looking for strikers, telling The Chronicle last week that if Maja leaves he will look to bring in two attackers.

“I’ve been quite open about our hunt for a striker but that is if Josh stays. If Josh goes, it becomes two and that’s not easy to do in 14 days (now eight).

“We’re finding it hard enough at the moment, without having to find two.”
