Hibernian return dismissed for reported Sheffield Wednesday target

Rumoured Sheffield Wednesday transfer target Efe Ambrose will not be returning to former club Hibernian according to reports by The Scottish Sun.

The 30-year-old Nigerian born centre-back rejected the opportunity to remain at Easter Road for the long-term and instead exercised an option in his contract which allowed him to leave the club earlier this month.

Ambrose did attend Hibernian’s William Hill Scottish Cup tie against fourth tier outfit Elgin City in Leith on Saturday as a spectator, however, a return to the club for the player has been dismissed.

A number of clubs south of the border have been linked with moves for Ambrose. Sheffield Wednesday are thought to be considering whether to offer the defender a contract at Hillsborough while Sky Bet League One club Plymouth Argyle have long been admirers of the player.

Ambrose has never played in the English Football League and a move down south could appeal to him. The centre-back started his career in his homeland with Kaduna United before moving to Isreali club Ashdod. A near-five-year spell with Glasgow giants Celtic followed, where Ambrose won four league titles before joining latest club Hibernian on a loan deal which was later made permanent.

During his time at Hibernian, Ambrose made 86 appearances for the club in which he scored six goals. The player was a member of the Hibs side which won promotion back to the top flight in 2017.
