Derby County confirm Frank Lampard reunion with former Chelsea and England teammate

Derby County have signed former Arsenal and England left-back Ashley Cole, it was announced on Monday evening.

Derby County announced the signing of 38-year-old left-back Ashley Cole on their Twitter account on Monday.

The deal will see Cole spend the rest of the 2018/19 Championship season at Pride Park, playing under former England and Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard.

Lampard spoke to the club website upon the announcement, saying that he is looking forward to working with Cole once again.

“I’m delighted that we’ve been able to secure Ashley’s services for the rest of the season. He’s a fantastic player, a quality left-back, and he also brings great experience to the dressing room,” Lampard said.

“I know him very well from our time together at Chelsea, and with England, and I also know what he can bring to the group and the influence he will have.

“Ashley is in good shape, which doesn’t surprise me because he’s an excellent professional, and he will compete for a place in the side like every other player here.

“I’ve made my feelings known over the last couple of days just how highly I think of Ashley and I have no doubt whatsoever he will be a positive addition to our squad.”

The 38-year-old comes with bags of experience at the top level. Cole has played a massive 384 games in the Premier League, also making 109 appearances in the Champions League for Premier League duo Arsenal and Chelsea and Italian giants Roma.

However, it has been some time since he was tested in English football. Cole left Chelsea for Roma back in 2014, where he played just 16 times in all competitions over the course of one season. Since leaving Italy, Cole has been playing in America with LA Galaxy, playing there for two years before his release at the end of the 2018 season.
