Derby County’s players ratings vs Reading

Derby County picked up their second win in the space of the three days, beating Reading 2-1 at Pride Park.

In a dominant first half for Derby, Duane Holmes opened the scoring inside the opening three minutes to net his first goal for the club. Before half-time, Harry Wilson’s deflected effort doubled the Rams’ advantage with his 10th league goal of the campaign.

Substitute Sone Aluko did get the visitors back into the game after being sent through on goal by Ovie Ejaria, but the defeat keeps them in the relegation zone.

Here is how we rated Derby’s players in their final league match of January.

Goalkeeper: Kelle Roos

The Dutch goalkeeper was making his first ever start in the Sky Bet Championship in place of the absent Scott Carson. Roos looked composed and he couldn’t have done much about Aluko’s goal. 6

Right-back: Jayden Bogle

Young full-back Jayden Bogle continued to show maturity, as well as his pace and strength. 7

Centre-back: Richard Keogh

Stayed solid throughout. As always, the Derby captain was keen to bring the ball out himself, but it didn’t always work out for him. 6

Centre-back: Fikayo Tomori

Fikayo Tomori was the first to almost every ball and tough to beat for large parts of the game, but a lapse in concentration from him allowed Aluko to put the Royals back in the game in the final 25 minutes. 7

Left-back: Scott Malone

Showed one or two moments of creativity and dealt with Modou Barrow well in the first half, but he was booked for a lazy challenge on Ovie Ejaria after the interval. 6

Centre-midfield: Harry Wilson

Despite dropping into more of a central role, Wilson had a big impact on the game, providing the assist for Holmes’ early goal as well as other contributions at both ends of the pitch. His first-half strike, which took a huge ricochet off Andy Rinomhota, was his 10th in the Championship this term if the powers that be don’t take it away from him. 8

Centre-midfield: Tom Huddlestone

Tom Huddlestone’s impact for Wilson’s goal was exceptional, breaking up a Reading counter-attack before orchestrating the move that led to the goal. 7

Centre-midfield: Mason Mount

Didn’t receive the ball in as many attacking positions as he would have liked to. Missed an excellent chance to score on the hour mark. 6

Right-wing: Martyn Waghorn

Martyn Waghorn worked hard off the ball for Derby, constantly pressurising the opposition’s back line and he set up Wilson’s goal on 40 minutes. 7

Striker: Jack Marriott

In the first half, Jack Marriott made life very difficult for Reading and was unlucky not to get a goal of his own. 7

Left-wing: Duane Holmes

Holmes’ first goal for Derby ignited a superb start for the Rams. His energy and trickery caused several problems for the visiting defence. His decision making let himself down at times.  7

Substitute: Mason Bennett

Looked lively on his first appearance at Pride Park since November’s defeat to Aston Villa. 6

Substitute: David Nugent

Featured as a substitute late on and he didn’t really affect the game. N/A

Substitute: George Evans

Was a sentimental appearance for George Evans, coming on in the final moments of the match against his former side. N/A
