Aston Villa rumoured to have submitted bid for Caen fans’ favourite

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith is thought to have made a move for Caen defender Frederic Guilbert according to reports by Birmingham Live.

Villa boss Smith is keen to bolster his side’s ranks in the current transfer window as the club look to make a strong push for promotion in the final few months of the season and the full-back positions are thought to be areas where the club could improve.

According to reports in France, Aston Villa have submitted a transfer offer for Caen right-back Guilbert. The player is something of a fans’ favourite at the Stade Michel d’Ornano and it remains to be seen whether the Ligue 1 outfit would be willing to let Guilbert leave. Officials at Caen have denied that they have received any offers for the player’s services, although a source close to Guilbert has hinted that an approach has been made by Aston Villa.

Guilbert was Caen’s Player of the Season last season as the club avoided relegation back to Ligue 2. The full-back made 42 appearances for the club in all competitions in which he scored one goal.

The player started his career in French regional football with AS Cherbourg before moving to Bordeaux where he spent three years. Guilbert initially joined current club Caen on a loan deal during the 2016/2017 campaign before signing for the club on a permanent basis in summer 2017.
