6 reasons York City fans should be optimistic this season

3. Russell Penn

After falling out of favour at previous club Cheltenham, Nigel Worthington wasted no time in snapping up Russell Penn. Quickly making his presence felt at the heart of the York midfield, Russell’s all action display on debut v Northampton was a welcome addition in a position fans thought the team had struggled to find consistency in up to that point of the season.

Already a favourite with the Bootham Crescent faithful, Russ’ performance away from home at Fleetwood in the play-offs showed exactly what he is made of. Despite taking two very nasty blows to the head he continued to put everything into a Man of Match display where, despite putting in a performance that will live long in the fans memory, York came up short.

A commanding influence on and off the pitch, Russell was quickly installed as club captain and this decision made a massive impact on the rest of York’s campaign. Yet to taste defeat in a regular league game as captain, fans will be hoping Russell can keep this record as long as possible next season. Never given the credit he deserves for his quality on the ball, Russell is the exact player any team should want to lead them towards a promotion push.
