Leeds United young striker confirmed as leaving Whites

According to FC Vilafranca’s official Twitter account (below), the Spanish club are bringing in Leeds United’s young Spanish striker Adrian Balboa in this January window.

Translated from Catalan, the tweeted announcement says that Balboa, who is on loan from Elland Road to FC Terrassa, will become Vilafranca’s “first signing” of the “winter market.”

Balboa was one of the early, young foreign signings brought to Leeds from noted clubs on the continent. The intention was to restock the Development and Under-18 set-ups, sides that had gone fallow under Massimo Cellino’s regime.

Under this strategy, the introduction of talented players such as Balboa, has seen Leeds United’s youth set-ups surge. The Under-18s and Under-23s are currently both top of their respective leagues.

The prodigiously talented Balboa joined the Whites from Barcelona-based side UD Unificación Bellvitge, reportedly picked up by Leeds United after a recommendation by Pep Clotet who was assistant manager at Elland Road at the time.

He’d outscored every player of his age category at the Catalan-based club, coming to Elland Road and becoming a fixture in Carlos Corberan’s Under-23 squad. He started eight games last season for the Under-23s, another eight appearances coming as a substitute, and scored two goals.

However, it looks like the young striker’s time in English football is coming to an end with his move to FC Vilafranca, who ply their trade in Spain’s Tercera División – the fourth tier of Spanish football.
