West Brom and Aston Villa’s pursuit of wantaway Premier League midfielder takes big hit

It has been reported over the past few months that Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden is keen to leave the Premier League club to move closer to his family. Championship duo West Brom and Aston Villa are keen to bring Hayden in, but the deal has hit a big obstacle.

According to the Newcastle Chronicle, Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden will not be leaving St James’ Park in the January transfer window unless they can sign a “quality replacement”. Championship sides Aston Villa and West Brom are both keen on the midfielder, but they may miss out on their target.

It is well documented that Newcastle United are far from big spenders under owner Mike Ashley and that has not changed this window. Rafa Benitez is being forced to use academy players as he struggles to bring players in to cover for several of The Toon’s injured first-team players.

One man that has had to come in to take the place of missing midfielders is Isaac Hayden. He is the club’s only senior midfielder available for selection, with former Blackpool loanee Sean Longstaff coming into the first team.

With Hayden now needed at St James’ Park, Aston Villa and West Brom look unlikely to sign him unless another midfielder arrives at Newcastle, despite Hayden making it clear that he wants to leave.

It was reported last week that The Baggies had a loan move for Hayden rejected.

The defensive midfielder has played on 11 occasions for The Magpies this season, coming back into the lineup for Newcastle’s last six games against Liverpool, Watford, Manchester United, Chelsea and both games against Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup.
