Aston Villa recall young winger from Portsmouth

Aston Villa have recalled winger Andre Green from his loan spell at Portsmouth, as reported by Birmingham Live.

The Villains have opted to promote from within in order to add a new attacking option, bringing the creative 20-year-old back to the Midlands.

An England under-20 international, Green has starred for Kenny Jackett’s Pompey this season and caught the eye of Villa boss Dean Smith. The former Brentford boss wasn’t in charge when Green was shipped out on loan but is clearly a fan of the winger, who could now play a crucial role in the second half of the season.

The Villa academy product has notched five goals in all competitions this season, etching his name on the scoresheet when Portsmouth claimed a scalp against Norwich City in the FA Cup.

The recall is a blow to Portsmouth, who have already lost midfielder Ben Thompson and forward Joe Mason after the pair returned to their parent clubs following loan spells.

Portsmouth boss Jackett was hopeful of retaining Green, saying this just ten days ago:

“I certainly hope both (Green and QPR’s David Wheeler) will stay, they are in that window of recall, so you will probably need to ask their parent clubs.

I like Wheeler and I like Green, I would want them to be here for the year, definitely. I would be disappointed if anything happened. But again, it is up to the parent club.”

However, Green will be available for selection in Villa’s squad for Saturday’s Championship clash with Hull City instead of making the trip to Oxford United with Pompey.
