Promising young Middlesbrough striker interesting several Premier League clubs

Middlesbrough striker Stephen Walker is attracting interest from the Premier League according to Sky Sports News (live blog entry 09:32am).

The report suggests that Middlesbrough are hoping to tie Walker down to a long-term contract, in order to fend off any interest from the Premier League. He currently has two years left on his current deal, having signed a five year deal back in 2016.

Walker is currently in and around the first team at Middlesbrough and made his debut in the Carabao Cup victory over Notts County in August 2018, assisting Ashley Fletcher’s second goal and scoring in the eventual penalty shoot out that won Boro the tie. He was also included on the bench for the Teessider’s Championship defeat at home to Sheffield Wednesday on Boxing day.

His form at youth level has earned him a place in the England under-19s set up, and he is currently the first-choice striker. He has scored seven goals in his first six appearances for the Three Lions, including a hat-trick against Macedonia in October.

Walker will take heart from being given his debut this season, and will hope he can make a name for himself at his hometown club. The likes of Marcus Tavernier, Dael Fry and Lewis Wing have broke through into the first team from the youth system, and have become established members of the squad.

No particular clubs are mentioned in the report, but the pull of the Premier League may be enough to prise him away from Middlesbrough in the near future.
