Pablo Hernandez picking up an injury is about as bad as it could get for Leeds United at the moment. Probably only Pontus Jansson would be up there with him but that’s exactly what’s happened. Marcelo Bielsa has conformed that Tyler Roberts will start in the number ten role if Hernandez’s injury is conformed.
Tyler Roberts was looking sharp on Sunday and got into some very good positions. He was unlucky not to score a couple and he’s already proved he can make an impact. Roberts scored three crucial goals over a spell in which Leeds managed to navigate through another tough injury crisis. He scored two in a three nil win over Preston North End at Elland Road and then a beauty at Hull City in a one nil win, a game with not many chances. He isn’t a natural number ten and certainly not Pablo Hernandez or Samu Saiz but he offers something slightly different.

Roberts arrived at the end of January last year and has been another played plagued by injuries. Before he even kicked a ball for Leeds United he cracked his shin and missed the rest of the season. Arriving from West Bromwich Albion Roberts cost around £2.5 million which isn’t small money for a player who had really only made a name for himself at Wallsall in League One. He was part of Marcelo Bielsa’s second XI during pre-season.
Leeds aren’t preparing in an ideal way ahead of the crunch game against Derby County just two days from now. Barry Douglas and Pablo Hernandez are both set to miss the game and although Liam Cooper could return the news that Lewis Baker has left the club isn’t ideal given that Bielsa wanted him to stay. All of a sudden the likes of Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton have gone from prospects to key players and Leif Davis from an under 23 to potential starter having only made one league appearance for the club.
