Lewis Baker hasn’t had a great time at Leeds United since he arrived in the summer. The ex-England under 21 skipper was the first through the door under Marcelo Bielsa but things haven’t gone to plan. Reports tonight are that Baker will be recalled by Chelsea in the very near future.

Baker has barely kicked a ball in relation to the amount of games he’s been fit to play. Leeds United have had their worst injury-hit campaign in recent history and Lewis Baker still hasn’t managed to find his way into the side. Just two league starts and cup appearances haven’t caught the imagination of the fans or indeed Marcelo Bielsa for that matter. His start in the FA Cup on Sunday was another example of a player who seems to struggle to take his chance anytime he was given it.

Leeds loaned in three players from Chelsea and as of yet haven’t had much luck at all. Lewis Baker was the first and hasn’t made an impact. Jamal Blackman followed and couldn’t break into the team before breaking his leg and returning to his parent club. Thirdly was Izzy Brown, a very talented player who arrived with a very bad injury and is almost ready to play. He was on the brink before the turn of the year before suffering some hamstring issues and that meant a hefty setback of around two months.

The news isn’t really much of a shock but Leeds United are lacking in numbers as things are and losing Baker would take away a player who clearly has ability and potential even if he hasn’t shown it yet. It would leave just three central midfielders at the football club, all of whom have already played many games this season. In the under 23’s central midfield isn’t a position we have many options in either. This news will most likely be confirmed or not in the coming days.
