Leeds youngster issues brave message about his FA Cup performance

It’s never easy to take criticism or hold your hands up when you play football, from a kick about in the park to the top level. Yesterday was a steep learning curve for youngster Leif Davis, the player was at fault for both of Queens Park Rangers goals and last night he was brave in admitting this to the fans.

Davis was prepared for this game, unlike his debut in December. The young left-back was thrown in at Aston Villa in a crunch game after illness meant Barry Douglas couldn’t take to the pitch. He didn’t do too bad that day although it did seem like a struggle for him as you would probably expect. However yesterday wasn’t great, and his admission was very refreshing, accountability is lessened when players can point out where they went wrong to fans and hold their hands up.

The first goal was a penalty, a mistimed tackle in the box and he can have no arguments. That’s just a case of playing in the fast environment of first-team football. Under 23 football is better than it used to be but the gulf between that and first-team is huge. The second was a case of being outfought by Jake Bidwell which is frustrating to see as a fan. Bidwell isn’t great in the air but he almost scored from the corner directly before as well.

Davis may well start on Friday night as Leeds take on Derby in a crucial match at Elland Road. The other options are Jamie Shackleton at right-back and Ayling at left unless he is needed at centre-back or Tom Pearce, who is the natural back-up for Barry Douglas. Pearce hasn’t played for some time and only came off the bench in the second half yesterday and was later replaced by Bulgarian striker Kun.
