Why European giants should have faith in the Championship – just look at Tammy Abraham

Championship sides have had to use the loan market to their advantage for a long time now, bringing in players from Premier League clubs to help bolster their squad for the demanding Championship campaign.

Especially this season, fans have seen the loan market help their sides. Take Tammy Abraham at Aston Villa, for example. The striker on loan from Chelsea has scored 16 goals in 20 Championship appearances season, firing them back into the Championship Play-Off fight after a stuttering start under former manager Steve Bruce.

Abraham’s form has seen him linked with an £18 million move to Premier League side Wolves, but as it stands, he will be staying with Villa for the remainder of the season.

With the transfer window reopening for January, loan links with Championship clubs have started to re-emerge. Leeds United have been linked with a loan move for Juventus prodigy Moise Kean once again, after being weakly linked with him for about two years now.

Rumours rumble on, but after Juventus sporting director Fabio Paratici’s comments, he appears to disregard a possible loan move for the striker, saying “No, we will try to keep all the players in our squad” when asked about a possible loan move.

But, why not? European giants Chelsea have found success in loaning Abraham out to the Championship on two occasions now, so why wouldn’t a loan move for a player like Moise Kean work?

Yes, there is a clear difference between the English game and the style of football played in European leagues, but the physicality of the Championship means youngsters either have to develop that side of their game, or take their technical ability to the next level.

It is often the problem with clubs with the stature of Juventus, for example, that young prodigies do not get the opportunity to grow because they are kept out of the first team picture by footballing superstars. Kean is being kept in the reserves by no other Cristiano Ronaldo, while Abraham would be out of the first team picture because of Eden Hazard – who has been played at centre-forward this season. Even then, he’d probably be behind Alvaro Morata, Olivier Giroud.

Before becoming a Manchester United and England favourite, playmaker Jesse Lingard was sent out on several loan spells to the Championship. The 26-year-old was sent on loan to Leicester, Birmingham, Brighton and Derby before making his way into the first team picture at Old Trafford. Now, he is a popular figure for both Man Utd and England, proving once again that youngsters can blossom in the Championship.

Not only do Championship loan deals benefit the youngsters and their clubs, but it benefits the Championship. Football’s wonderkids coming to the second tier of English football would massively boost the league’s reputation, helping the increasing quality of football grow further as well.

The Kean to Leeds deal seems highly unlikely, despite the lure of Marcelo Bielsa and his stylish football. But Euro giants, like Juve, could find that sending their young stars to the Championship helps them fulfil their potential, whilst helping Championship clubs along the way.
