Aston Villa chase could end in tears – problems and hitches

Late in December, Aston Villa were said to be in the driving seat to bring in Celta Vigo midfielder Nemanja Radoja, the story breaking via regional digital newspaper La Voz de Galicia.

La Voz de Galicia said that the situation between Celta Vigo and Serbian midfielder Radoja “may be resolved on upcoming dates.” It is a situation that is exacerbated by the 25-year-old’s contract running down this coming summer.

They went on to state that he was “training with his teammates” but had not played a game this season and had been allowed to start his Christmas break ahead of the rest of the squad.

A warning given at the time was that Villa were not alone in their interest, that Serie A sides Fiorentina and SPAL were also keeping tabs on the Serbian international.

The Novi Sad-born, two-cap international signed for Celta Vigo in mid-August 2014 from Serbian first-tier side Vojvodina. He has gone on to make 146 appearances for Celta across all competitions, including 115 La Liga appearances.

That caveat proved to be prescient, as now Spanish media outlet ElDesMarque say that Fiorentina have re-entered the fray and are looking to achieve a loan deal “at low cost until the end of the season,” before then going on to sign Radoja on a free.

ElDesMarque also go on to warn that a big obstacle facing Villa and their hopes of landing Radoja rest in the work permit system. They say that this can “throw to ruin” any agreement reached with Villa.

This dual threat, the re-emergence of Fiorentina interest and the English work permit system, could very well see Villa’s interest end before it has realistically begun.
