“Not been good enough from me” – Leeds defender tweets honest assessment of performances

When Leeds United were suddenly linked with Scottish defender Barry Douglas in the summer there was a frenzy amongst fans. In terms of replacing Charlie Taylor last season it simply didn’t happen but the signing of Douglas was exactly what was needed. Today he tweeted a very honest assessment of his own recent performances.

Douglas arrived for an undisclosed fee believed to be just short of £5 million which, for a player who had more assists than anyone else in the league last season was a bargain. We haven’t seen that from Douglas yet in a Leeds shirt but for me it comes down to confidence. I honestly believe he was quite hurt by Wolves allowing him to leave and he hasn’t fully recovered from that disappointment yet. The talent is clearly there, some of his crossing and passing is brilliant but we don’t see it enough.

As time has gone on this season we have seen more and more backwards passing and less confidence going forward in general. He should be flying up and down the park showing the division why he’s the best full-back at this level and you cant help but feel he’s holding back on the ability he possesses in the final third. Defensively he’s been pretty good in the main but in recent weeks he’s even struggled to keep that standard up for himself.

Today he tweeted the above and it’s nice to see the honesty from a player who might not be playing great, but certainly hasn’t been the worst in the side. The lack of a challenge against Hull for the second goal was very strange and very out of character. The fact he’s acknowledged his form certainly helps because he knows the standard has been dropped. Douglas is a quality player and if he can hit some form in the second half of the season the team would see huge benefits.
