Derby County eyeing loan swoop for Premier League winger

Derby County are eyeing a loan swoop for Newcastle United’s Jacob Murphy, according to the Daily Mirror.

Premier League side Huddersfield Town have made an approach for the out-of-favour winger but the Rams are aiming to rival them to sign him this month.

Murphy, who joined Newcastle in August 2017 from Norwich City for £12 million, has started just three games in the Premier League this season.

He played 28 games in all competitions in the last campaign, scoring once for Rafa Benitez’s side.

Derby want to sign him to help bolster their attacking options and boost their promotion chances. Frank Lampard’s men are currently 6th in the Championship and six points off the automatic promotion places.

The Pride Park club do have some other targets in mind as well as they hope that this is the year that they finally gain promotion to the Premier League.

Murphy has played in the second tier before and would be a great acquisition for the Rams if they can see off interest from Huddersfield this month.

He started his career at Norwich, alongside his twin brother Josh who now plays for top flight outfit Cardiff City, and went onto play 42 times for the Canaries’ first-team.

He also enjoyed loan spells at Swindon Town, Southend United, Blackpool, Scunthorpe United, Colchester United and Coventry City in which he gained some valuable experience.

This is a story to keep an eye on over the next week or so with it looking likely that Murphy will be departing Newcastle.
