With West Bromwich Albion suffering a 2-1 defeat against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, Sheffield United moved up to third with a convincing 3-0 victory away at Wigan Athletic.

Rotherham United moved out of the relegation zone, beating Preston North End 2-1 at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

That saw Bolton Wanderers drop back into the bottom three after falling to a disastrous 6-0 defeat to Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.

Goalkeeper: Niki Maenpaa (Bristol City) 9.08

Bristol City goalkeeper Niki Maenpaa starred as their 2-0 win over Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium leaves them only five points off the play-off places.

After just six minutes, Maenpaa saved Saido Berahino’s attempted spot-kick, one of seven saves made by the 33-year-old stopper.

Centre-back: Mike van der Hoorn (Swansea City) 8.19

Mike van der Hoorn got his second goal for Swansea City in as many games as Graham Potter’s side were emphatic 4-1 victors over Reading at the Madejski Stadium

The Dutch defender also made more clearances than any other player (eight) and the joint-most interceptions (three).

Centre-back: Tom Lees (Sheffield Wednesday) 8.09

Sheffield Wednesday surrendered an early lead to draw 1-1 with Birmingham City at Hillsborough.

Defender Tom Lees provided the assist for Steven Fletcher’s goal inside the opening 20 minutes, as well as making four clearances and winning 14 aerial duels.

The 23-year-old defender is the first of four Hull players to make the Team of the Day, having created Nouha Dicko’s sixth and final goal of the match.

De Wijs won nine aerial duels and made five clearances against Bolton, warranting the fourth-highest match rating of the clash.

Right-midfield: Jarrod Bowen (Hull City) 8.69

Jarrod Bowen’s superb run of form continued, as he scored his seventh goal in as many matches.

He got the Tigers’ fifth of the day, contributed two key passes and completed 81% of his attempted passes.

Centre-midfield: Jack Colback (Nottingham Forest) 8.76

Forest midfielder Jack Colback got the Tricky Trees’ first two goals during their six-goal thriller with Leeds.

It was his first career brace and his first goals since May 2018. Colback’s passing accuracy of 87% was also the highest out of every player in the match who played for more than 45 minutes.

Centre-midfield: Matt Grimes (Swansea City) 8.51

Swansea’s star man in Berkshire was midfielder Matt Grimes, whose free-kick was turned in on the stroke of half-time by Van der Hoorn.

Grimes won five tackles, completed 87% of his attempted passes and also made three interceptions as he excelled against a Reading side whose struggling form continued.

The final Player of the Round accolade of 2018 went to Hull’s in-form winger, Bowen, so it only seems fair that the first of 2019 went to his club colleague and opposing wideman, Kamil Grosicki.

He netted the Tigers’ first and third goals of the match and created Evandro’s strike a minute before doubling his tally for the match, taking his number of Championship goals for the campaign up to four.

Millwall got a third straight Championship win by beating Ipswich Town 3-2 at Portman Road, moving them six points clear of the bottom three sides.

Tom Elliott was the star man for Neil Harris’ Lions, scoring their final goal of the match and creating Jake Cooper’s fifth goal of the campaign.

Hull’s Chris Martin got his first senior goal since February 2018 as part of Hull’s battering of Bolton.

The Scottish striker also provided the assist for Bowen’s effort and hit the woodwork with an attempt six minutes after scoring.

Tammy Abraham’s fine season at Villa Park continued in Aston Villa’s 2-2 draw with Queens Park Rangers.

He got both goals for Dean Smith’s side against the Super Hoops, taking his total for the season up to 16 in the Championship.
