Championship Team of the Round #25

Sky Bet Championship leaders Leeds United fell to a shock 2-0 defeat to Hull City at Elland Road, ending their six-match winning run.

Their nearest Championship title-challengers Norwich City were surprising 4-3 losers at home to Derby County, with the Rams coming from behind twice at Carrow Road.

With the top two sides both slipping to shock home defeats, third-place West Bromwich Albion had a great chance to close the gap on the Whites and the Canaries, only to be held to a 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns by Sheffield Wednesday.

Middlesbrough picked up their first home win in five attempts, beating bottom-placed team Ipswich Town 2-0 at the Riverside Stadium.

A 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest for Millwall at The Den saw them pick up consecutive victories for the first time since October to move three points clear of the relegation zone.

Here is who made our final Championship Team of the Week of 2018, based on match rating statistics from WhoScored.com.

Goalkeeper: David Marshall (Hull City) 8.02

Hull’s David Marshall was the standout goalkeeper in the league on Saturday as his clean sheet against Leeds saw Marcelo Bielsa’s side fail to score for the first time since being held to a goalless draw by Middlesbrough at the end of August.

He made five saves and claimed the ball twice to keep his first away clean sheet in over two months.

Hull City Goalkeeper David Marshall could not be beaten at Elland Road.

Defender: Fikayo Tomori (Derby County) 8.07

Derby found themselves 2-0 down with 10 minutes remaining of the second half, but a thunderous half-volley from centre-back Fikayo Tomori kickstarted an incredible comeback for Frank Lampard’s Rams.

Not only did the 21-year-old net his first senior league goal, the on-loan defender from Chelsea also made five clearances, won three aerial duels and completed two tackles, warranting him the second-highest rating in the match, behind Norwich’s striker Teemu Pukki, who despite netting twice for the hosts, was not able to make our side.

Defender: Ryan Shawcross (Stoke City) 8.34

Stoke City were held to a goalless draw at the University of Bolton Stadium by Bolton Wanderers, but if it wasn’t for a standout showing from former England international Ryan Shawcross, they could easily have suffered their first defeat against Bolton since November 2011.

Shawcross won an unprecedented 23 aerial duels away from home, 14 more than any other player. The 31-year-old also made eight clearances, only opposition centre-back David Wheater executed more (nine).

Defender: Adam Webster (Bristol City) 8.26

Bristol City extended their unbeaten run to seven matches with a 1-0 victory over Rotherham United at Ashton Gate, courtesy of defender Adam Webster’s late goal.

The 23-year-old won four aerial duels, completed two tackles and made three clearances, as well as heading Jack Hunt’s corner in the final five minutes of the match.

Defender: Toni Leistner (Queens Park Rangers) 8.16

Queens Park Rangers’ recent surge in form was halted by Reading, with the two sides drawing 0-0 at Loftus Road.

Centre-back Toni Leistner, who scored a week ago during their win over Forest, came closest to breaking the deadlock, hitting the woodwork in both sides of half time. He also made more clearances than any other player (eight).

Midfielder: Jarrod Bowen (Hull City) 8.97

This weekend’s standout player was Hull winger Jarrod Bowen, who got both of Hull’s goals at Elland Road.

Netting in both sides of the interval, Bowen also completed one key pass and made more interceptions than any other player (four) as the 22-year-old netted his third brace and won his third star man award in the space of six matches.

Jarrod Bowen has already netted 10 Championship goals for Hull this season.

Midfielder: George Friend (Middlesbrough) 8.09

As Tony Pulis’ Boro cruised to victory over Ipswich at home, it was wing-back George Friend who was named as WhoScored’s star man.

The 31-year-old won eight aerial duels, three tackles and was one of six home players to contribute two key passes in what was a very one-sided match in terms of attempts on goal.

George Friend was the highest-rated player at the Riverside Stadium yesterday.

Midfielder: Enda Stevens (Sheffield United) 8.04

Friend was not the only wing-back who impressed on Saturday, as Sheffield United’s Enda Stevens starred in their 3-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers at Bramall Lane.

He provided the assist for captain Billy Sharp’s second goal of the match in the final 15 minutes of the game, but he could have scored himself midway through the first half, having only been denied by the woodwork.

Enda Stevens was effective at both ends for the Blades against Blackburn.

Striker: Joe Garner (Wigan Athletic) 8.53

Saturday’s highest-rated striker was Wigan Athletic’s Joe Garner, who scored both of the Latics’ goals during their 2-2 draw away at Swansea City.

Garner’s opener came from the penalty spot after 10 minutes, before grabbing his second before the 35-minute mark. He also won five aerial duels and they were his first goals since scoring against Sheffield United in October.

Joe Garner netted his first brace for Wigan since signing from Ipswich Town.

Striker: David McGoldrick (Sheffield United) 8.33

Blades striker David McGoldrick was highly influential as they swept aside Blackburn in Yorkshire.

After creating Sharp’s opener, McGoldrick then added Chris Wilder’s side’s final goal of the game from close range, his eighth for the club.

Striker: Billy Sharp (Sheffield United) 8.37

Leading the attacking line in both the Team of the Round and in United’s winning side is club captain, Sharp.

His quick-fire double late on took his league tally for the campaign up to 15, the joint-most this season alongside Norwich’s Pukki and Brentford striker Neal Maupay, equalling his own previous Championship record for goals in a season which he has achieved during both the 2009/10 and 2010/11 seasons whilst playing for Doncaster Rovers.

Billy Sharp has 106 career goals in the Championship.
