Aberdeen boss would love unlikely return of Derby County defender

Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes has told The72 that bringing back Derby County defender Max Lowe would be his ‘first choice’ but admits that a further loan deal is highly unlikely.

The 21-year-old South Normanton-born left-back has spent the first half of the season on loan at Pittodrie but will now return to parent club Derby County with the player expected to be handed opportunities to start matches for The Rams.

Aberdeen boss McInnes rates the youngster very highly and admits that he would be rushing to bring the player back to the club should the opportunity arise.

“I’ve spoken to Frank (Lampard) and they’ve got a few injuries stacking up” McInnes told The72 after his side beat Livingston 2-1 in the Ladbrokes Premiership at the Tony Macaroni Arena. “I think that there is an indication that Max is going back to play.

“If I get a phone call to say that has changed, I will be over the moon with it but I don’t think we can sit back ourselves waiting for the phone to ring, I’ll try to bring in a left-back.

“He would be my first choice to come back as he was magnificent for us, he was such a good kid to work with.

“I think that ship has sailed unfortunately and I think that he is trying to get himself into Derby’s team.”

Lowe returns to parent club Derby County with a groin injury which could rule him out of action for the next couple of weeks and Aberdeen boss McInnes has put the injury down to an over-heavy fixture list for his side in recent weeks.

McInnes said “I’ve been concerned about nine games in December, a cup final and eight league games.

“It’s unfair on everybody at the club.

“We have picked up muscle injuries to Anderson, Hoban, McGinn and Max Lowe and it’s just down to scheduling.

“It is fatigue and players being more susceptible to injuries.”

Defender Lowe made 19 appearances in all competitions for Aberdeen during his time in the ‘Granite City’ while he scored in the 4-1 win over St Mirren at Pittodrie in October.
