Aston Villa out of the race to sign unwanted Chelsea defender

Sky Bet Championship club Aston Villa will not be making an approach to sign unwanted Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill according to reports by The Telegraph.

The 33-year-old Dronfield-born defender has made just seven appearances for The Blues this season and the club are thought to be ready to offload the former England star.

Various press reports have previously hinted that Aston Villa could opt to move for Cahill with the player possibly keen to be reunited with former defensive colleague John Terry who is assistant manager at Villa Park, however, it has now been reported that Villa will be priced out of making an offer for the defender.

Cahill’s wages at Chelsea are rumoured to be more than £100,000 a week, a salary which Aston Villa would never be in a position to pay. The Blues are believed to want to sell Cahill but even if he is loaned out for the remainder of his contract, it is understood that they would like the player’s new club to pay his wages in full, something which will effectively kill off any transfer interest from Aston Villa.

Whilst Villa are the second-highest scorers in the Sky Bet Championship, they have the worst defensive record in the top half of the table and reinforcements at the back are likely to top manager Dean Smith’s wanted list for next month’s transfer window.

Villa had conceded two or more goals in each of their last three matches prior to their 1-0 Boxing Day win at Swansea City and they must improve that record if they are to challenge for promotion back to the English Premier League.
