Karanka on brink as Nottingham Forest fail to sparkle

It is a cut-throat business is football management, and often it doesn’t take that long for the knife to be dug in, and dug in deep.

It doesn’t matter whether you are managing in the Premier League or Sunday league, it’s a result-driven business and your position is on the line.

Obviously the higher up the league system you are, the stakes are higher, but all managers run the risks of being sacked if the results don’t tally up with board expectations.

Many have fallen by the managerial wayside this season already, and Nottingham Forest boss Aitor Karanka is being tipped to follow them by John Percy, writing in The Telegraph. Karanka’s crime as such is that he has allegedly failed to meet his end-of-year target.

News of his future, possible dismissal from the Forest hotseat comes after allowing a 3-0 lead to slip against high-flying Norwich City. The Canaries continued their recent knack of scoring injury time goals to salvage a 3-3 draw at the death.

In his article Percy says it is understood that “Karanka was under strict instructions to secure a place in the play-offs by January 1.” This expectation comes after a more than significant transfer spend in the summer – including the £13.2m record signing of Joao Carvalho.

Forest currently sit in 10th position in the Sky Bet Championship, just three points shy of the final play-off place held by big rivals Derby County.

Karanka, quoted in Percy’s article, was philosophical about the drawn game at Carrow Road. Speaking afterwards, he said: “I can only be concerned about things that are in my hands. I cannot care about things that are not in my hands. I know myself and I know my job. I know what I did in Middlesbrough. I have to try to do the same here. I can only be concerned about things that are in my hands. I cannot care about things that are not in my hands.

Forest face Millwall on Saturday but, with the Nottingham Forest board discussing his future at the club, The Telegraph say “the Spaniard is unquestionably facing the end of his tenure.
