Leeds United: 39 goals, 23 games but what next

In their wildest dreams, and even with the shock appointment of Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds United fans would not have expected to be where they are right now.

The simple fact is this, Leeds United enter the last vestiges of the 2018 part of the 2018/19 campaign top of the pile in the Sky Bet Championship. They are also there by merit. They have only been soundly beaten by one side – West Brom handing out a 4-1 drubbing at The Hawthorns.

The other two losses, both 2-1, came in games that were as close  as the shared scoreline suggests. With half the season gone, Leeds United have won 14 games, drawn six games, lost three and scored these 39 goals.

What happens next?

The answer to the ‘what next’ question begins today, at 3pm, against one of the only three teams to best Leeds this season – Blackburn Rovers. The Lancashire side arrive at what will be a packed Elland Road in a game where a win, and three points, will see the Whites consolidate their top-of-table position. Hopefully, should results elsewhere also go their way, it will open up breathing space from those teams below them.

There is a healthy enough gap of six points between Leeds and West Brom in 3rd place. Stretching this points gap would give the Whites breathing space, something that would be reassuring for their fans. Add in the possibility of a further three points against Hull City on December 29; 2018 could be a very good year for the Whites.

Historically, over the last decade, the side top of the pile on Christmas has gone up to the Premier League. That’s the ultimate goal, over the remaining half of the campaign, for Whites fans – to see Leeds United back up amongst the best football sides in England.

It has been a long wait since 2004, but could that agonising wait soon be over?
