Championship transfer interest “growing” in Peterborough star player

According to Sun reporter Alan Nixon on Twitter (below) Peterborough United are facing Championship interest in star striker Ivan Toney.

Peterborough

Peterborough fans will just be getting over the sale of start striker James Marriott to Championship side Derby County, now this.

Marriott’s replacement was 22-year-old Toney, a classy centre-forward who signed on at London Road from Premier League side Newcastle United. The Toon bought the young forward from Northampton Town for a fee of around £300,000 in early August 2015.

His time on Tyneside was punctuated by a series of loan deals out of the club, deals taking in the likes of Barnsley (21 games/two goals/two assists) and Scunthorpe United (35 games/15 goals/one assist).

The bulk of his football experience has come in Leagues One (110 games) and Two (53 games), although he does have four games of Premier League experience under his belt from his time at Newcastle United.

This season at Peterborough, he’s certainly shot to life in Steve Evans’ side. This season Toney has hit six goals in 21 League One appearances, as well as laying on four assists. Across all competitions the youngster has 12 goals and five assists.

Nixon points out that the Posh are “already in a fight” to keep hold of youngster Toney and that interest in the young striker is “growing.”

Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony is renowned for his terrier-like approach to transfer wranglings, so any potential suitors for Toney’s services need to be aware that he’s not going anywhere on the cheap.

Saying that, a Championship side looking for an instant shot-in-the-arm might be willing to test Peterborough’s resolve in wanting to keep hold of Toney.
