Leeds United chasing Premier League youngster transfer

According to today’s Sun on Sunday (page 61), and backed up by Sun reporter Alan Nixon on Twitter (below), Leeds United are showing interest in Everton youngster Mason Holgate.

The Doncaster-born Holgate, a 22-year-old defender, fulfills the requirements that Marcelo Bielsa has set for players at Elland Road. His primary position is that of a centre-back, yet he can also fill in at right-back.

Holgate started his football career at Barnsley, who are currently in League One, pushing through to the first-team in September 2014. He went on to make 22 appearances for the Tykes, scoring once and providing one assist.

His form, and obvious potential, saw Premier League side Everton pay £1.3 million in mid-August 2015 for the then 19-year-old. Since his move to Goodison Park, the young defender has gone from strength to strength and has made the step up to being a regular England Under-21 player.

Away from international recognition, Holgate has featured 23 times for Everton’s Under-23s (three goals), but it is his step up to the first-team that is more of note. The youngster has so far made 48 full Everton appearances, with 38 of these coming in the Premier League.

Leeds United are currently at the top-end of the Championship table, and a win against Aston Villa this afternoon could see them retake top-spot from Norwich City. However, they only have Pontus Jansson as a recognised centre-back.

Since the injury to club captain Liam Cooper, who is back in training, the Whites have had to rely on the likes of young Finnish international Aapo Halme and midfielder Kalvin Phillips to fill in.

Bringing in a natural defender like Mason Holgate, a youngster with both pedigree and Premier League experience, would be a sensible move for Leeds United. It will enable them to push on with more confidence as they look for a long-awaited return to the top flight.
