Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray keen to strengthen squad in January transfer window

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has told the Lancashire Telegraph that he is keen to bring in some new players to turn “okay” results into ones that are “pretty good” in the second half of the Championship season.

Blackburn Rovers have exceeded people’s expectations so far in the Championship as the season reaches the halfway point. Tony Mowbray’s side currently sit in 12th place, tied on 31 points with QPR, Stoke and Birmingham. In a Championship season that is as tight as ever, Rovers are just five points away from the Play-Off places.

However, Rovers have struggled to see out games in recent weeks and could be sat within touching distance of the top six had they seen out games against Birmingham City – for example.

To help boost Rovers’ unlikely Play-Off push, manager Tony Mowbray is looking to bring in some reinforcements to help his side in the second half of the season.

“The plan for this window is to try and see whether we can help the team on the pitch and improve the results from being okay to pretty good,” Mowbray told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“I feel as if in the second half of the season you can go on a run you can propel yourself to where you want to be. As we have seen there are fine margins in this division, real fine lines between winning, losing and drawing matches.

“Maybe a little bit of extra quality in certain areas of the pitch might just help us become a better team that can help us achieve better results.”

“With practically the same team were are in the middle of the table.

“Our ambition moving forward has to be towards getting near the top end of the table and trying to do that, or even beyond that.

“Hopefully we can improve the team in this window a little bit. I don’t think it’s the time to go and bring seven or eight new players in.

“I think it’s a time to add players bit by bit and if you do need to drastically change things then the summer is the best time to do that so you can bed your players in as best you can through pre-season.”
