Ekuban

Leeds United outcast striker continues goal-den streak

He arrived at Leeds United as one of the first wave of signings under the pen of Victor Orta, and much was expected of Caleb Ekuban.

Sadly, that expectation failed to materialise. Ekuban, whilst possessing an affable persona, failed to find his shooting boots at Elland Road. He featured in 20 Sky Bet Championship games for the Whites over the 2017/18 season, scoring just the one time.

Even though he added a goal and an assist in the Carabao Cup, it was a far cry from the 17-goal, five-assist season the campaign before with Albanian side FK Partizani. It was that blistering form that brought the likeable Ghanaian to Elland Road.

However, with his shooting touch not there, and with new manager Marcelo Bielsa not seeing him in his plans, a move away from the club was a cert. That proved to be the case, Ekuban being shipped out to Turkish side Trabzonspor.

Ekuban initially found the going tough in Turkey, failing to make much headway after a goal-scoring début against Galatasaray. However, the on-loan Leeds United striker is certainly hitting the straps over the last few games.

Despite continuing to play bit-part roles from the Trabzonspor bench, Ekuban has hit two in his last three Super Lig games. Added to that, he hit a brace in the 5-0 Turkish Cup victory over third-tier side Sivas Belediye.

Ekuban is at the Turkish side on a season-long loan, with a purchase option clause inserted in the contract. Should Caleb Ekuban keep up this goal-scoring streak, then you’d think that there’d be every chance of that option being exercised.
