Darrell Clarke describes his departure from Bristol Rovers as “the saddest of days”

Darrell Clarke has described his departure from his beloved Bristol Rovers as “the saddest of days”, according to BBC Sport.

Darrell Clarke was one of the longer-serving managers in the EFL, he joined the club in March 2014 after some impressive results with non-league side Salisbury.

Bristol Rovers lost seven of Darrell Clarke’s past 10 games in charge of the club and he left Bristol Rovers 21st in League One, four points from safety.

Coach Graham Coughlan has taken interim charge of the club because assistant manager Marcus Stewart left the club as well as Darrell Clarke by mutual consent.

Darrell Clarke developed some fine talents during his spell as manager which includes Billy Bodin, Matty Taylor and Lee Brown. Not to forget the talent he brought through the Bristol Rovers youth ranks such as Ellis Harrison, Tom Lockyer and Ollie Clarke.

Darrell Clarke told BBC Sport about how much the club means to him: “This season has been a disappointment for me.”

“Last Thursday was simply the saddest of days, saying my goodbyes to everyone at the club. It’s a day that none of us wanted to experience, but that’s football.”

“I want to take this opportunity to apologise to everyone connected with the club for the results so far. It’s not for the want of the lads trying.”

“They have given me and the staff everything, always working hard and believing in each other.”

Darrell Clarke has some great memories with the club he loves, he has guided Rovers to consecutive promotions and stabilised the club in the third tier.

“I have been fortunate enough to develop a special bond with the club’s incredible supporters and I will always be thankful to them for the way they backed me, the staff and the players.”

“Together, we have created some incredible memories; returning to the Football League at the first attempt at Wembley Stadium, then following this up with automatic promotion to League One.”

“Those days and many others are etched in our minds and are something we can all take great pride in.”
