It was a shock late last week when Leeds United fans suddenly found out that popular attacking midfielder Samu Saiz was to be leaving the club.
However, citing family issues and being unsettled in England as the reasons, initial reports were that a deal was being brokered with La Liga side Getafe. That is as the case proved to be, news being confirmed by Leeds United that a deal had been struck.
This deal, as United confirmed, was a temporary one in the first instance, with a view to a permanent move in the summer window. The popular Spaniard will remain in Madrid with his family ahead of his loan spell commencing.
Many Leeds United fans are still a little in shock, others are actually adjusting to what is going to be life without Samu Saiz. What may add to the speed of the adjustment could be news of the fee that the Whites could very well collect at the end of this season.
According to a report in The Mirror, Leeds United are in a ‘double-your-money’ situation when it comes to Saiz’s Getafe deal. They say that the Whites will “pocket over £6million” from the Saiz deal, not bad considering the Whites only paid Huesca £3m in July last year.
This £6m deal is said to consist of an initial £500,000 loan with, with a redemption fee of “£5.8million when the transfer becomes permanent.” That deal will likely pale into insignificance should Leeds manage to gain promotion to the Premier League.
The Whites currently sit atop the Sky Bet Championship on 45 points and have a six point, +3 goal difference cushion to 3rd place and West Brom. This weekend’s game sees the Whites take on Aston Villa who sit in 8th and trail Leeds by 12 points.
