Tony Mowbray discusses Blackburn Rovers’ links with former loan star

In the run up to the January transfer window, Blackburn Rovers have been linked with a return move for former loan star Sam Gallagher of Premier League side Southampton.

Blackburn Rovers have been linked with a move for former loanee Sam Gallagher from Southampton. Manager Tony Mowbray has been discussing the possibility of bringing the striker back to Ewood Park for a second spell with Rovers.

Gallagher joined Blackburn Rovers on loan for the 2016/17 Championship season. The Englishman scored 12 goals in 47 games for a struggling side, as Rovers were relegated to the third tier of English football.

When speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, Mowbray said it may be difficult to complete a deal with The Saints due to the recent arrival of new manager Ralph Hassenhutl as manager, after former Rovers manager Mark Hughes left the club.

Southampton have just got a new manager and I’m assuming he will be assessing each player,” Mowbray said.

“I don’t think they’ll be in any great rush to push anyone out of the door.”

However, Mowbray added that he was a fan of the side that he inherited from Owen Coyle in February 2017, failing to rule out a possible return for the big striker.

“That team that I inherited, however long ago it was I generally liked that team.

“The points accrued was pretty good. It’s about building a team, building a club.

“Let’s see how much we have to spend in January, whether we are going down the loan route or looking to sign some permanent players.”
