Wigan Athletic are being linked with a surprise loan move for AFC Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe, as reported by The72 earlier today.
The Latics are looking to bolster their attacking options in the January transfer window and are targeting the 36-year-old.
Defoe has played just twice in the league for AFC Bournemouth this season and could be allowed to leave them in a couple of months’ time.
He has been one of the most prolific strikers in the country over the past decade or so. He has 273 goals in his career to date and has also racked up 57 caps for England.
Defoe has bags of experience and has previously played for West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Portsmouth, Toronto and Sunderland in his lengthy career.
Wigan are currently 16th in the Championship at the moment after their League One title winning campaign under Paul Cook last season. Signing Defoe next month would be a big statement of intent by the Latics.
Sheffield United have also been linked with him over the past couple of weeks.
Here is how the Wigan fans have reacted on Twitter to rumours linking them with a move for Jermain Defoe-

I’d love Defoe, but surely a top left back and an experienced centre half should be bigger priorities. #wafc
