West Brom lining up January move for Newcastle United defender

Championship promotion chasers West Bromwich Albion are considering a January transfer window move for Newcastle United’s former Aston Villa defender Ciaran Clark, according to the Daily Mail.

Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark is on the radar of West Brom, the Daily Mail have revealed.

West Brom manager Darren Moore is reportedly on the look out for a left-footed defender, and he has identified Irishman Clark as one of his targets for the upcoming transfer window.

The 29-year-old defender has fallen down the pecking order at St James’ Park, with summer arrivals Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez impressing during their stints in the first 11 in the absence of Frenchman Florian Lejeune and captain Jamaal Lascelles.

The Irishman has made nine appearances in all competitions this season, with eight of those coming in the Premier League. Clark has scored two goals this season, most recently scoring against Burnley to help The Magpies to a 2-1 victory at Turf Moor.

Clark spent the first 16 years of his career at West Brom’s rivals Aston Villa, joining the Villains as an 11-year-old in 2000. He swapped Villa Park for the North East in the summer of 2016, joining Newcastle United for £5. The defender went on to play an important role in Rafa Benitez’s promotion winning side.

On occasions, Clark has also filled in at left-back for Rafa Benitez’s side in the absence of first choice left-back Paul Dummett.

Clark has represented the Republic of Ireland on 32 occasions since his debut in 2011, including two appearances for his country at the UEFA European Championships in 2016.
