Manchester United and Liverpool battle for Birmingham striker

According to Sun reporter Alan Nixon, Manchester United and Liverpool are going head-to-head in an effort to land Birmingham starlet Romello Mitchell.

Mitchell is just 15 year’s old, but he will be 16 by the time the January transfer window opens. The Express support Nixon’s claims, adding that the two Premier League giants are interested after the youngster scored against their academies in recent games.

He’s already amongst the goals this season for the Blues Under-18s, showing class and technique that stretches beyond his tender years. It is this potential that has drawn the Premier League big boys to the Midlands, engaging them in a struggle to land the rated youngster.

As Nixon as intimated, Mitchell is a “top kiddie”, and it is this that leaves the Birmingham City youngster open to being plucked up by the higher-tier sides and into their top-rate academy system.

It is, however, something that Blues fans commenting on Nixon’s post are less than happy about (below).

Whilst such views as the two above are valid, it would be hard to look past the possibility of a deal being struck should either side be serious in their intent. It is hardly likely that young Mitchell will be propelled up the rungs at St Andrews and fast-tracked to the first team set-up.

That would open the door for the more mouth-watering prospect of the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool stepping in and using their big-name cachet to lure the youngster to their Carrington or Melwood set-ups.

If push comes to shove, the latter scenario might well be the more likely to happen.
