Blackburn Rovers legend linked with Celtic coaching role

Former Blackburn Rovers star Damien Duff is thought to be one of the names being considered by Glasgow giants Celtic for their Under-20s coaching vacancy according to reports by The Scottish Sun.

The 39-year-old Irishman retired from playing a little under three years ago and has since been coaching young players at former club Shamrock Rovers and within the Republic of Ireland international youth setup.

It has now been reported that Duff could become the next coach of Celtic’s Under-20 side. The Bhoys have a vacancy for that age group with former coach Shaun Maloney having moved on to work with the Belgian national team. It is believed that Duff is one of a number of potential candidates being considered for the role after holding talks with the hierarchy at Celtic Park.

As a player, Duff joined Blackburn Rovers as a 17-year-old and went on to become something of a club legend at Ewood Park making 223 appearances for the club in all competitions while he scored 35 goals. The midfielder was a member of the Rovers squad which were promoted back to the English Premier League in 2000/2001 while Duff lifted the League Cup the following season. He played the full 90 minutes as the Lancashire club defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

In 2003, Duff left Blackburn Rovers to join Chelsea in a reported £17 million deal and the player enjoyed three years at Stamford Bridge before spending time with Newcastle United and Fulham. Duff then played in Australia with Melbourne City before returning home to end his career with Shamrock Rovers.
