Will Huffer kept a clean sheet on his Championship debut this weekend as Leeds United disposed of Bristol City at Elland Road. The 20 year-old stopper was deputising for both Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Jamal Blackman.
Blackman is out for the foreseeable and back at Chelsea with a broken leg. The form of Peacock-Farrell is being questioned by many regulars at Elland Road. Huffer and his academy team-mate, Kamil Miazek may not be ready to step-up for Marcelo Bielsa’s promotion-chasers on a regular basis.
Here are three goalkeeper’s Leeds could sign in January to aid their promotion charge.
1. Tom Heaton
Heaton is still Burnley’s club captain, and despite a return from injury in April of this year, he has not made a Premier League appearance since the home-win over Crystal Palace just over a year ago. The 32 year-old has found England team-mates Joe Hart and Nick Pope too difficult to dislodge for Sean Dyche’s men, and the popular skipper may be looking for a temporary route out of Turf Moor.
2. Fraser Forster
Another England goalkeeper who has found chances hard to come by. Forster is a forgotten man on the south-coast, he hasn’t even made a match-day squad this term and was banished to the bench by Alex McCarthy – formerly of Leeds United – after Boxing Day of last year. Forster has European and International pedigree and with Angus Gunn and Harry Lewis ahead of the ex-Celtic man, as well as McCarthy, Forster could seek pastures new.
3. Emi Martinez
Still on Arsenal’s books at the age of 26, Martinez is older than Bernd Leno and has made just six league appearances in his entire time at the Emirates club. The Argentine has Championship experience in the shape of loan spells at Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Should Martinez leave the club, Dejan Iliev would become third-choice. At 26, Martinez will be seeking regular first-team football. Even just for the short term.
