Aston Villa defender Mitchell Clark is facing a three-week absence after picking up an injury whilst out on loan, as reported by Birmingham Live.

The highly-rated 19-year-old is currently on loan at League Two side Port Vale and sustained a hamstring tear during the Valiants’ defeat to Swindon Town last Saturday.

The Valiants may be languishing in 17th place but Clark has shone since making the temporary switch from Villa. A versatile defender, he failed to break into the first-team at Villa Park but has established himself as an integral part of Neil Aspin’s squad.

Clark’s seamless transition from academy football to League Two will have both impressed and alarmed Vale boss Aspin, who will be aware that the former Wales youth international’s contract contains a release clause. The 53-year-old will be keen to retain his services but claimed that he is more than happy for the teenager to receive treatment from his parent club:

“He will be in good hands at Villa – a big club and they will have more staff than we have to give him better treatment in certain areas where we couldn’t do that. So, he is in the best hands.”

He also revealed the message he received from the Championship club and spoke out about how the defender’s playing style makes him susceptible to injury:

“We have got the message from Villa this morning that he will be out for three weeks.

“But we just hope the lad gets back as quickly as possible.

“He has played a lot of games in a short space of time and going from under-21s football to, if you like, more intense football in League Two. The way he plays, he is always one of those players that can pick up a hamstring, a thigh or calf injury.

“We will be glad when he is back, and back in contention, but we have enough to cover.”

Port Vale will take on Yeovil Town tomorrow as they look to increase the gap between themselves and the drop zone.
