Aston Villa will have to beat seven-time Champions League winners if they want free agent Premier League winner

Amid Aston Villa’s defensive worries, The Mirror reported that the Championship side were on the look out for a defender to come in on the cheap, and had eyed up free agent centre back Robert Huth as a potential option. However, if they are still interested in the German, they will have to go up against Italian giants AC Milan, according to Italian site Mediaset.

Much like Aston Villa, Italian Serie A giants AC Milan are also going through somewhat of a defensive injury crisis and will have to look into the free agent market if they want to bring in reinforcements outside of the transfer window.

Ahead of the Midlands Derby against Birmingham City, Villa are having to consider all defensive options available. However, they could be without star man James Chester for the derby game. Wales manager Ryan Giggs has revealed that Chester arrived for international duty whilst carrying and injury.

“Chezzie (Chester) just had a bit of a knee problem coming into the camp and it just flared up in the game at half time,” Giggs told Birmingham Mail.

If Villa really are going to delve into the free agent market for defensive options, then they will have to act fast. The Mirror reported that former manager Steve Bruce looked at the possibility of bringing in Huth as a reinforcement back in December, but a move has failed to materialise. If Smith wants to continue the interest in the former Premier League winner, he will have to compete with giants AC Milan.

Huth has been a free agent since he was released by Leicester City at the end of last season. He enjoyed a successful spell at the King Power Stadium, playing a big part in the Premier League winning campaign.
