Leeds United to battle three La Liga clubs in chase for former Champions League winger

Leeds United are one of four clubs looking to bring in Alaves winger Ibai Gomez, according to Spanish paper AS.

Former Champions League winger Ibai Gomez has been impressing in the La Liga with high flying Alaves, who currently sit in 5th place in the table, ahead of European giants Real Madrid and former club Athletic Bilbao.

Spanish paper AS report that Gomez is in the middle of a contract dilemma, which has caused significant interest in the availability of the winger. La Liga trio SD Eibar, Real Sociedad and former club Athletic Bilbao are all looking at a possible move for the Spaniard.

Gomez – despite remaining undecided on his future – insists that the first team he will listen to will be current side Alaves, where he has spent the last two seasons after joining in 2016.

The 28-year-old started his career at Basque side Santutxu, where he spent his youth career before spending one season with Sesta River club, scoring eight goals in 36 games. Before joining the senior team at Bilbao, Gomez played 19 games for their B-team, Bilbao Athletic, where the Spaniard scored 12 goals and picked up 2 assists.

Gomez went on to spend six years with Athletic Bilbao, playing 145 games, scoring 17 times and assisting 23 goals. He also played 26 times in both the Champions League and the Europa League, helping the Basque Country side get to the Europa League final in 2012, where they lost to fellow Spanish side Atletico Madrid 3-0.

Bielsa is reportedly looking at Gomez, and the Spaniard could be seen to come in as a similar figure to that of fan favourite Pable Hernandez, who arrived at Elland Road with bags of experience at the top level under his belt. As Hernandez can, Gomez can play on either wing as well as in attacking midfield.
