Derby County striker Jack Marriott has started to find his footing in the Championship after his move from Peterborough United in the summer transfer window.
It took Jack Marriott eight appearances to score his first goal for Derby County after a chaotic summer for the 24-year-old. After missing almost all of pre-season with former club Peterborough United protecting their prized asset, Marriott arrived at Pride Park miles behind his new teammates in terms of fitness.
However, after scoring his first goal for the club at Old Trafford in The Rams’ victory over Manchester United on penalties in the Fourth Round of the Carabao Cup, Marriott has really kicked on, scoring five goals in his last six games.
After earning his way into Frank Lampard’s starting 11, former Posh striker Marriott is reluctant to let the chance get away from him.
“I’ve set a level for myself, I’ve set the standards, and I want to maintain that,” Marriott told the Derby Telegraph.
“I want to keep the shirt, I want to continue to play, I want to continue to do my best for the team, and to score goals, and help the team win games.
“I know that if I continue to do that, I will hopefully continue to play, so I’ve just got to keep focused and take each game as it comes.”
The striker reflected on how he felt upon his arrival at Derby County and the chaotic summer he had at London Road with Posh.
“At the start of the season, I was still kind of going through a pre-season, so it was a very different time for me. Because of the summer and chaos that it was, I was still quite behind.
“So it was a different stage, whereas I now feel I’m into the season now, and I’m playing and I’m enjoying it, and I just want to maintain that.”
Last season’s League One top scorer went on to discuss the competition between strikers for starting positions with fellow attackers David Nugent and Martyn Waghorn.
“Nuge (David Nugent) is always training well, he’s always fighting for the shirt, as I was when he had it.
“But we’ve got great camaraderie, all the strikers. Everyone gets on really well and wants the best for each other.
“We’re just enjoying it and I just want to maintain my personal levels to ensure the best for the team.”
