Former Swansea City manager lined up to replace Paul Clement at Reading

Former Swansea City manager Francesco Guidolin is reportedly one of the head candidates to replace Paul Clement as Reading manager if he gets sacked, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

Reading are looking at replacing former Reading manager Paul Clement with another former Swansea manager, in the form of Italian coach Francesco Guidolin. Clement became manager of the Welsh side about a year after Guidolin’s departure – after the former Udinese manager endured an unsuccessful 25 game spell in Wales.

Reading’s sporting director Gianluca Nani reportedly sees Guidolin as the ideal replacement for Clement – who has started the season poorly with the Berkshire side. Reading currently sit 22nd place in the Championship after winning on four occasions in the first 16 games. The Royals are tied on points with 23rd place Hull and 21st place Preston, and five points adrift of Ipswich Town at the foot of the table.

Paul Clement’s position as manager of Reading is looking perilous, as his side face bottom-side Ipswich Town on Saturday, who recently sacked Paul Hurst and appointed former Norwich manager Paul Lambert.

Guidolin has worked with Reading’s sporting director Nani before, when Nani worked at Watford in the 2014/15 season, and Guidolin was the Premier League club’s sports coordinator.

The Italian has been out of a job since his spell in South Wales with Swansea, and the 63-year-old could make his return to management with Reading, becoming his 20th managerial job in his career.
