With the Saturday closest to Plot Night signifying that it’s time for those November 5th pyrotechnics to go off early, fireworks of another kind are exploding across the Steel City tonight.
Whilst the Blades are a rising proposition of a side in Sheffield, it is their city neighbours Wednesday who are on something of a slide. It is a slide that was typified by the way that they fell apart against Norwich today, the Canaries leaving the Owls plucked off, featherless and on the end of a 4-0 second-half battering.
Since a 2-1 win over Bristol City five games ago, Sheffield Wednesday’s form has been nothing short of atrocious. Four consecutive losses, 12 goals conceded, just two goals scored – that’s the headline figures behind a run of results that has seen them slide to 17th place in the table.
Sitting that low, on the back of such abject form, is painful for fans to take. The results are painful enough to take, but so will the realisation that their side are just four points shy of the relegation places. It is something that is no doubt playing on the minds of Wednesday fans, and rightly so.
Next up, this coming Friday, is the Steel City Derby as struggling Wednesday travel to Sheffield United. It might only be a distance of three miles that separates the city neighbours, but visiting Wednesday will be hoping that the Blades have been dullened somewhat after their 1-0 loss to an improving Nottingham Forest side.
However, after today’s emphatic loss was more than some fans could take, or were willing to take. The reactions on Twitter bear testament to this. Here’s what some fans have said on Twitter, and it isn’t pretty:
#swfc fraud, conman, clueless!

So we lost our third in a row by letting three in, our fourth in a row by letting four in. Everybody braced for our fifth game in the run…. #swfc

Nothing can be defended today. The players, the manager, the leadership at the top or our own goal.
Not only can the players not play this system the manager has chosen to implement, they clearly don’t believe in it either. Normally only ends one way #swfc

Poor recruitment is one thing & I do agree with that. But this guy is simply cutting his nose off to spite his face by freezing players out.
He’s committing professional suicide & he should be asked to leave.
His appointment is another example of the clubs poor recruitment #swfc

Literally without forestieri or Matias we are a 10th of the team, no creativity. 4 games without them and 4 losses #SWFC
