There have been many reports already linking Leeds United with players in the upcoming January transfer window, this is something that will intensify as the opening of said window creeps closer.
One player whose name has been at the forefront of these mutterings is Alaves winger Ibai Gómez. Gómez is having something of an excellent season so far in Spain’s La Liga competition, the 28-year-old Bilbao native scoring three goals and providing one assist in just 10 games.
This spurt of activity, when coupled with the fact that he’s in the final year of his current deal, has alerted the interest of “several clubs in La Liga” according to a recent article from Spanish website AS entitled ‘Ibai Gómez crosses borders’.
This article also stated that others on the ‘outside’ were also interested, name-checking Leeds United as a side waiting “on the sidelines.” The article also confirmed that Leeds “wanted to sign him in the summer market,” but this was not something that Gómez contemplated.
With that rejection in mind, article author Javier Beltran says that Leeds United have returned to the mix, and are “willing to negotiate with Alaves in the winter market.” Beltran goes on to say that a move to the UK is not out of thinking for the Alaves winger, a player who is coming across “his best time.”
Beltran says that Gómez is a much more complete player now, citing his vision and strength in the air as adding to his undoubted touch. He also says that these go alongside a much more powerful player and that his new dietary and physical regime “invites a noble project for the next campaign.”
That said, there’s said to be no rushing the Alaves winger whose sights are set firmly in the now rather than the future. Quoted at the end of the article, Gómez states about the growing interest: “I don’t lose a second thinking about it.”
