Sheffield United sharp as Billy’s hat-trick cuts through Wigan

Sheffield United cut to the top of the pile after today’s comprehensive win over visitors Wigan Athletic, the Blades easily passing the Latic acid test.

It was a victory earned largely on the back of not only solid teamwork, but a battling spirit that saw the Blades come out on top in the game, and atop the Championship table. That might only be temporary, as West Yorkshire rivals Leeds United are taking on Nottingham Forest.

It was another stirring performance from the men from the Steel City, a performance spearheaded by striker Billy Sharp (below). It was threesy does it for the 32-year-old as he hit a hat-trick to get back on the scoring trail.

Sharp’s three goals takes the popular hitman’s total to 10 for the season, easily putting the evergreen frontman onwards of hitting a 20-goal+ campaign.

It will be a personal total that many observers feel well in reach of him, a total that is helping to drive the Blades as one of the danger sides in this season’s Sky Bet Championship campaign.

Sharp’s first goal came as the game headed towards the half, the Sheffield United forward’s effort putting the Blades back in front after Kai Naismith had cancelled out the South Yorkshire side’s opener – an own goal by Wigan’s Chey Dunkley.

On 53 minutes, the Blades cut through again and Sharp tucked away his second of the afternoon to stretch their lead into one that would make Wigan work.

10 minutes after that effort, Sharp hit his hat-trick third, and United’s fourth, to effectively seal the game for the rampant home side who, by then, were 4-1 to the good.

Wigan did pull another one back, Joe Garner making it 4-2 in the 69th minute. However, it wasn’t enough to be able to make a dent on Sheffield United’s dominant position – another win showing further proof that the Blades are blossoming further into a dangerous unit.
