Leeds United are keen on signing Alavés winger Ibai Gómez, according to Goal.com.
Marcelo Bielsa worked with the 28-year-old at Atletico Bilbao and is now hoping to reunite with him at Elland Road in the January transfer market.
Gómez was linked with the Whites over the summer and they could finally get their man in a couple of months time. His contract at Alavés expires at the end of the season meaning he is likely to leave them in January for a cash sum to avoid losing him for nothing in June.
The Bilbao-born winger started his career with spells at Santutxu FC and Sestao in the Basque regional leagues and was snapped up by Atletico Bilbao in 2010. Gómez spent his early days there playing for the reserves in the third tier.
However, he broke into the Bilbao first-team in the 2011/12 season and went onto play just under 150 games altogether for the La Liga side. He helped them get to the Copa Del Rey final twice and the Europa League final during his six years at the San Mamés Stadium.
Gómez then made the switch to Alavés in July 2016 on a three-year deal. He has been a key player for them ever since, playing 76 games and chipping in with 17 goals in all competitions. He was also part of the Alavés side who reached the Copa Del Rey final in 2017.
Having spent his whole career to date in Spain, could he now be tempted to help Leeds United’s promotion push to the Premier League and link back up with Bielsa?
