Derby County could be looking to utilise the loan market and the injury suffered by George Thorne severely disrupted boss Steve McClaren’s plans for the new season.

Thorne looked to be the final part of the jigsaw in The Rams’ plans for the 2014/15 season after completing his big money move from West Brom. However, with the talented midfield man now ruled out for 9 months speculation suggests Derby will seek to bring in a replacement on loan.

Nathaniel Chalobah has been mentioned on social media as a possible replacement for Thorne. Chalobah has enjoyed successful loan spells with Watford, Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough in the past and could provide the answer to the defensive midfield problem.

With the deadline for Premier League squads to announce their 25 man squads approaching too, this could also make other players available.

The Rams are certainly unlikely to rush into a decision with the experienced John Eustace the obvious replacement from within the squad. McClaren will have concerns about Eustace’s longevity in the role due to the aging legs of the 34-year-old, so don’t be surprised if there is transfer activity in the coming months.
