Shakhtar Donetsk boss Paulo Fonseca is the latest name to be linked with the Aston Villa job, as reported by The72 yesterday.
The Championship side are in the hunt for a new manager after sacking Steve Bruce following a poor start to the season.
The likes of Brentford’s Dean Smith and Arsenal and France legend Thierry Henry have been mentioned as Villa look for a manager who can get them promoted back to the Premier League.
Paulo Fonseca, who is 45 years-old, is new to being be linked with the vacant post. He is currently in charge of Shakhtar Donetsk but could be the big name that Aston Villa want.
He has spent the majority of his managerial career to date in Portugal managing Avos, Pacos Ferreira, Porto and Braga. Fonseca then made the move to Ukraine to take over at Shakhtar Donetsk in 2016 and has since won the Ukrainian Premier League title twice and the Ukrainian Cup twice.
Aston Villa are currently 13th in the league but are two points off the Play-Offs. After getting to the Play-Off final last season under Bruce, the aim this season has to be going one better and making the next step into the top flight.
Paulo Fonseca has experience of managing a winning team but would he swap Shakhtar Donetsk for Aston Villa? Here is how the Villa fans have reacted on Twitter to the rumours-
I just can’t see Fonseca leaving Shakhtar to come to #avfc especially with the squad he’ll inherit. Anyone who comes in is guaranteeing themselves 18 months in the #efl. He must be on a massive wage at Donetsk as well so not ideal with FFP. Think we need to manage expectations!!
