Bielsa admits he misjudged Mateusz Klich as a footballer in pre-season

Mateusz Klich has probably shocked everyone apart from himself this season. Although many of us believed he would play a key part we maybe didn’t realise quite how good he would be. His fourth goal of the season came in spectacular fashion last night, making him the most productive player going forward for the club this season to date.

Klich has two assists to add to his four goals but it’s not just that, his ability on the ball has added a new dimension to Leeds United, and Marcelo Bielsa has admitted he misjudged the player on arrival. Bielsa had him training with the under 23’s then playing as a centre-back in the second XI during pre-season. An injury to Adam Forshaw gave Klich the opportunity to impress, although Sampdoria bound Ronaldo Vieira had started ahead of him in the final pre-season fixture with Forshaw out.

Klich must now be one of the first names on the team-sheet and even the return of Adam Forshaw probably doesn’t give Marcelo Bielsa a headache currently. How Klich can be dropped from that team is anyone’s guess, his ability has shone through and made him one of the most effective players in the division this season. Bielsa admits he made “many mistakes” regarding Klich in the summer and is impressed that Klich was so patient.

Klich has already forced his way back into the national set-up with Poland. He scored in his second appearance in the international break as he rescued a draw against the Republic of Ireland and in this form you wouldn’t bet against anything other than another call-up and start during the next UEFA Nations League fixtures. Klich was immense last night as he pulled Leeds back into the game, scoring yet another crucial goal.
